Les Mis plot summary.

Personality: Enjolras is a student in Paris, whose life is absolutely dedicated to the ideal of a French Republic, and to overthrowing the reinstated French monarchy to bring this about. Nothing can, or has, distracted him from this purpose. He has no interest in women or other vices (if he has them at all, they are kept well in check). He drinks little and smokes less. He names France his mother, and patria, the fatherland, his mistress.

As the child of aristocrats, Enolras has never experienced the poverty or disadvantage of the actual poor of France. He nevertheless sees it as his obligation to use his skills and education to fight for the rights of those who have neither. This totally the influence of his liberal reading and studies. He believes firmly and without compromise that the Monarchy is a great evil, and that Republic, by road of revolution, is the means to healing a lot of the injustices and wrongs of France. It is a great betrayal to the French people that the revolution of 1830, only two years ago, led not to a Republic, but to another King.

Whatever he does is out of principle and not petty emotion, leading him to be described as the Logic of the Revolution. Anything which can be done to bring about the Republic must be done. He counts Robespierre, a lawyer who was at the head of The Terror, which saw hundreds to the guillotine, as an inspiration. In order to achieve their great goal, losses will be sustained and things which will hinder their progress must be cut out. When on the barricades one of the revolutionaries shoots and kills a bystander. Enjolras kills him in his turn to show that it killing innocents is not an acceptable part of their movement.

He is, however, self aware enough to recognise that this is terrible of him. He takes no joy in killing (he shed a tear as he kills a Captain of the National Guard, knowing that the man is his brother in the Republic), and has judged himself for it. He fights for a world where men will not have to make such decisions or take such actions because they will not be necessary.

He is well educated on contemporary views on society, believing that men have rights which cannot be superseded by a 'god given' Monarchy. If there is a God, he believes, God is in man and therefore Man's right is of the highest importance. He does what he can to help the poor and to separate himself from his wealthy background - though he keeps a private room it's not extravagantly decked out. He gives to the poor and does disparage them for their situation like other aristocrats might. His main focus however is on bringing change on a political level. This is another effect of his liberal readings.

Despite this, he has had little time for actual people with actual problems. He loves The People as a group, but individuals tend to frustrate him and he can be abrasive and short with them. Having died for France and now no longer being in France, this will be a challenge for him- having to deal with people as people.

On the whole Enjolras likes and respects his friends in the ABC. He is loyal to his friends and places them next highest after the revolution in his life. They are his family, his brothers. He listens closely to their counsel because of this, and though he is not often swayed from his views he accepts that, in times which do not call for revolution, their views would be the correct ones (see: Combeferre and Revolution but Civilization).

Over the night of the June 6th Revolution Enjolras has realised many things about himself and about the world which he has not had time to fully think over. One which he has is the realisation that France is not the sole land which deserves the freedom and republic which he fights for. He may fight with violence now, but he dreams of a free and peaceful utopia for all men. He realises in the final few hours that death is upon him and the others he has led to the barricade, and still holds his hope that things will turn out for good for those who live after him- whether French or not.

Powers/Abilities: Enjolras is a vanilla human.

He has studied in one of the schools in Paris, focusing in law and history. He has a sound background of contemporary (early 19th C.) history, philosophy, politics, and rhetoric. He's a skilled public speaker, used to speaking to large crowds and using his skills of rhetoric into garnering support for his cause. He has great volumes of philosophy and politics memorised.

He is a fair shot with a pistol and a musket, and can use a saber.

Inventory: Enjolras has his clothes (navy pants, white shirt, navy vest, red jacket, black cravat, red/white/blue cockade pinned on the jacket) which are bloody and bullet ridden. He has a large red flag (also bloody and torn) and a red sash about his waist.
